In Russia, the winter holidays signify the arrival of a festive duo: Grandfather Frost and the Snow Maiden. The grandfather and granddaughter arrive on New Year’s Eve, having traveled through the forests from their home in the nearby Russian town, Veliky Ustyug. The current Sacramento County Teachers of the Year have now earned statewide recognition. State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell has selected Shannan Brown and Kadhir Rajagopal as two of the five California Teachers of the Year for 2011.

“I see it as my job to find ways to not only tap into students’ potential, but to guide them in seeing it in themselves,” Brown said.

Let’s start with the individual highlights.
