The Pirates’ offense may be built around sophomore Antavius Sims, but his two backups shone in Saturday’s first scrimmage. Freshman quarterback Shawn Robinson, Sims’ former backup at Americus (Ga.)-Sumter High, hit receiver Kordarius Rice for a 53-yard touchdown pass and freshman quarterback Sean Madlem, from Villanova Prep, connected with freshman receiver Golden Head for a 65-yard scoring strike.
Rice, a transfer from Southern Mississippi, will compete for a starting spot, said VC coach Steve Mooshagian.
Freshman running back Dezerick Reed, the Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Nevada a year ago, ran seven times for 45 yards.
