Gena Johnson scored in double-figures for the third straight game for the Pacific women’s basketball team, but UC Santa Barbara’s Emilie Johnson scored a career-high 31 points on 11-of-12 from the field to lead the Gauchos to a 69-62 win over the Tigers at Pacific’s Alex G. Spanos Center Thursday night.
The Tigers’ Johnson, a freshman guard out of Elk Grove, Calif., came off the bench for a team-high 16 points on six-of-nine shooting, while sophomore guard Erica McKenzie (Sparks, Nev.) added 13 points on four three-pointers, but for the second-straight meeting this season, UCSB pulled away midway through the second half with a sizeable run in an otherwise tight ballgame.
An 18-4 run over 6:52 beginning at the 11:47 mark turned a one-point Tiger lead into a 13-point Gaucho advantage.

Winning Student Will Receive $500 College Scholarship from SAFE Credit Union
The Sacramento County Office of Education (SCOE) is now accepting submissions for an essay contest designed to honor local military veterans. The winning high school student will receive a $500 college scholarship, courtesy of SAFE Credit Union.
Every year, SCOE honors the many contributions of local veterans who left high school to serve in the U.S. military during World War II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War through the Operation Recognition program. Qualifying veterans, who received an honorable discharge, may contact SCOE to receive their high school diplomas. Diplomas are also presented to Japanese American citizens who were forced to leave high school due to WW II internment.

Entering their key WSC North showdown Wednesday night, the Oxnard College men’s basketball team held steady at No. 14 in the Southern California coaches’ poll while the Ventura College women’s basketball team dropped out entirely.
Neither the Condors (13-6, 5-0) nor the Pirates (15-7, 3-2) lost a game last week. The two rivals were No. 14 and No. 15 a week ago. VC yielded its place to Santa Monica.

The University of Santo Tomas in Manila celebrated the 400th anniversary of its founding Friday. The school is the oldest university in Asia and has been recognized by the Vatican as a royal and pontifical university.
Pope Benedict XVI greeted the university on its quadricentennial with a taped video message played during a mass that marked the feast of St. Thomas Aquinas, the patron saint of Catholic schools. The mass was held at the UST Grandstand and Open Ground, where two other popes had celebrated masses.
