Utah Valley University provides a return of $7.97 for every state dollar invested for an annual economic impact of $534 million, according to a recently concluded study by Jack Faucett Associates, Inc. UVU’s return on investment to the state’s economy has increased by 21 percent over the past five years.

“This report illustrates in concrete terms what we’ve known about UVU for some time — namely, this institution is an indispensable economic engine for the state and the region,” said UVU President Matthew S. Holland. “Rare if ever will a stock or treasury portfolio return an investment eight-fold annually, but that is precisely what UVU does for the state of Utah.” Of the more than half-billion dollars UVU contributes to Utah each year, $458.7 million is concentrated in the institution’s service region, which is comprised of Utah, Summit and Wasatch counties. The Passing of a Lovely Man

Darryl Strawser passed away Tuesday morning; we and the rest of the world have lost a lovely man. I never saw him without a smile on his face and his good humor was contagious to everyone. Everyone except perhaps the photo student who was being ripped apart for a poor photograph and who became a much better photographer because of Darryl’s insightful criticism. Darryl left behind many aspiring and successful young people who took photographic giant steps from his influence and Darryl’s ever vigilant persistence on perfection.

Yet he was not just an extraordinary teacher. First and foremost he was the most courageous person I have ever known. He battled a horrible disease for more years than anyone else.

      This is something – if you have the right facilities in your classroom, powerpoint can be a very useful addition to your teaching toolkit.

      The Haas School of Business at the University of California at Berkeley has assembled an impressive line-up of top executives to come to campus this spring as part of a variety of conferences and speaker series, including business leaders from Citi, Kaiser, Whirlpool and Infosys, the school announced recently.
       
      On January 31st, Haas will host Deborah Hopkins, chief innovation officer and chair of Venture Capital Initiatives at Citi. Whirlpool CEO Jeff Fettig will follow on February 6th, FICO CEO Mark Green on March 1st and Kaiser Permanente Chairman and CEO George Halvorson on April 12th. These executives will be part of the Dean’s Speaker Series.

      The CMO Insight Series, another speaker series for MBAs, will begin on February 8th with a talk by Richelle Parham, chief marketing officer of eBay. St
