Bishop, CA, United States (AHN) – Six people died Monday night after a collision in southern California involving three vehicles, including a van from a private Christian college.

A Ford sports utility vehicle crashed into one of three vans carrying athletes from California Baptist University along U.S. Highway 395, killing at least one person in the van and five in the SUV. Twelve people in the van were also injured.

The university said in a statement its cheerleading coach, Wendy Rice, died in the accident. Rice was driving members of the cross country team from the campus in Riverside to a high-altitude training camp in Mammoth.

California Baptist said the injured students were brought to area hospitals but that the extent of their injuries were unknown. No one else from the two other university vans was injured.

The SUV crossed over from southbound to northbound lanes before hitting the van and exploding on impact. A second collision then occurred between the Ford and another vehicle not affiliated with the university.

The accident took place at about 8:20 p.m., five miles from Bishop.

“We are deeply saddened by this tragic event,” university president Ronald Ellis said in a statement. “We have lost a beloved member of our CBU family… Our thoughts and prayers are with those who lost loved ones in this terrible accident and with those who were injured. We pray for their speedy and complete recovery.”
