Great start to season
Ava Cotter on April 13, 2011 in Education Sport EntryWhat a great start to the season.
Just one day into the WCSSAA senior boys soccer schedule and three squads have already identified themselves as legitimate contenders for the Premier League title.
A fourth might also have what it takes.
Eastwood, Grand River and Cameron Heights made statements on Wednesday with victories on the opening day of the season, while Waterloo Collegiate looks to be a threat despite falling 4-2 to Cameron Heights.
Grand River will only get better when Sasa Radosevic and Ljuoba Stojkovic return from suspension, while Eastwood will be much improved if Aaron Schneebli is cleared to play. The gifted defender recently parted ways with the Toronto FC Academy but has yet to receive the go-ahead to play with the Rebels.
Camerons opening-day victory comes less than a week after winning the Trojan Cup tournament, so the Gaels appear to be the real deal. Midfielder Ronnie Pfeffer scored the winner against WCI when he scored from 65 yards out, using the wind and an artificial turf bounce to beat the Vikings goalkeeper.
Grand River blanked SJAM by 2-0 score and although I didnt see the game, I was told the Renegades should have scored a couple more.
Eastwood downed Preston 3-0 and the young Rebels are only going to get better. Terel Christian was a standout in midfield, while junior-age goalkeeper Pawl Carvajal is a rock at the back.
Give the early season edge to Grand River. Or maybe Cameron. Or perhaps Cameron.
Forest Heights and Bluevale open their Premier League seasons this afternoon at RIM Park and the winner of that game will also become part of the early season conversation.
Early word out of the District 8 boys soccer league is that it could be a down year for St. Marys, which would make Resurrection the team to beat in that circuit.
The Eagles lost Bryce Alderson to the Vancouver Whitecaps Academy and lost a pair of standout players from last years team for academic reasons.
Starting to work on District 8 preview now.
Like everyone else, Im hoping WCSSAA will get its website up and running with up-to-date scores.
