Great performers

There were some great achievements during the final week of competition in 2010. Here are just five of them.

Jamie Reiner, St. David: The Grade 12 goaltender stood on his head for the Celtics at the McKerlie Classic hockey tournament, leading his team to the championship game. He was perfect in the round robin as the Celtics beat Fergus Centre Wellington 2-0, Burlington L.B. Pearson 1-0 and Sir John A. Macdonald 2-0. The Celtics then beat Forest Heights 3-2 in the quarter-finals and then scored a 4-3 quadruple overtime win over WCI, a game in which Reiner stood tall. The Celtics’ other goalie, Mitch Voss, unavailable due to a dental emergency. The Celtics fell 3-0 to Uxbridge in the title game, Reiner’s first loss of the season. He currently sports a 10-1 record and a 1.25 goals against average.

Connor Watson, Huron Heights: The fifth-year swimmer won the the senior boys high school division at the WCSSAA championships. He won the 200-metre freestyle and was in the in the 100m free and 50m free. All three of his times were good enough to qualify for OFSAA.

Emily Griffiths, Resurrection: The Grade 12 player was outstanding in her team’s 3-0 win over the Rockway Flames as the Phoenix improved to 7-0 in the District 8 senior girls volleyball standings. When she’s not playing volleyball, Griffiths takes to the ice with her ringette team. She won a national title in 2009 as a member of the St. Clements Rockets.

Alley Newman, Forest Heights: The Grade 12 player was dominant in her team’s 3-0 win over the WCI Vikings as the Trojans entered the Christmas break with a 6-0 mark in the WCSSAA senior girls volleyball standings. She is a two-time all-star and will play a key role for the Trojans as they go for their second straight OFSAA title.

Terel Christian, Eastwood: The Grade 11 student had 14 points and recorded five steals in the Rebels’ thrilling double overtime win over WCI. The Rebels trailed by nine points in the fourth quarter before rebounding for a 57-52 victory. Christian rotates between starting forward and the team’s sixth man. The Rebels entered the Christmas break with a 2-4 record after a four-point loss to the talented Grand River Renegades.
