CWOSSA playoffs a no-go
Ava Cotter on October 21, 2010 in Education Sport EntryThere will not be a local team participating in this year’s Central Western Ontario football playoffs.
Both WCSSAA president Jeff Klinck and CWOSSA executive director Barry Mutrie have told me WCSSAA’s first-place team won’t be competing for the right to compete in this year’s Western Bowl, scheduled for Nov. 24 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.
I’m writing a story for Friday’s Record and will provide a link when it’s ready.
The news will come as a big disappointment for those who had supported Waterloo lawyer Tim Fedy’s plan to have the regular-season champion advance. Fedy, however, said this morning he hasn’t given up and has one other avenue to pursue.
The debate has attracted record numbers to this blog and a large number of comments. The accompanying poll has also been a hit, with almost 79 per cent of respondents saying the first-place finisher should be allowed to withdraw from the WCSSAA playoffs and focus on CWOSSA.
And it’s far from a local issue. Votes have come in from Yellowknife, Vancouver, Calgary, Regina, Buffalo, Cambridge (England), St. Andrew’s (Scotland) and Friedenfels (Germany).
