Another reason to merge

Here’s another reason to merge the Waterloo County and District 8 leagues.

For the first time ever, there exists the real possibility the two best senior basketball teams in Waterloo Region both compete in the smaller D8 circuit. The Resurrection Phoenix and St. Mary’s Eagles are being touted by some as the early favourites to emerge as CWOSSA champion.

And there’s the problem. Only one District 8 team will make it to the  six-team CWOSSA quad-A tournament, while WCSSAA will have two respresentatives — even if they aren’t as good as the Catholic schools.

Doesn’t seem fair. Does it?

Nor does it seem fair that the St. David Celtics will get a free pass to the CWOSSA triple-A event, no matter what they do the rest of the season. The Celtics are the only D8 team competing at the triple-A level and are already in. Meanwhile, nine WCSSAA schools will fight for three berths at CWOSSA.

Doesn’t seem fair. Does it?

They can do it in hockey and football, so there’s no reason it can’t be done in basketball. And soccer for that matter.

Just sayin’.

Meanwhile, St. David will once again join forces with the Heart and Stroke Foundation for the 11th annual Hoops for Heart fundraiser. This event will be held on Tuesday, from noon until 2 p.m in the school’s gymnasium.
