Live in Words: MFA or MA?

One of the major reasons why I chose the Publishing and Writing program here at Emerson College was the flexibility in the curriculum. Unlike many of the other Publishing programs out there, this program provides a combination of both the business side of publishing with the creative art of writing.

Many students may find themselves in a similar position as me. I was torn between the MFA in Creative Writing and the MA program in Publishing and Writing. My answer to you is this: where is your passion? Does it lie in the industry, the creativity of layout and design, the joy in editing? Or do you prefer to be the writer? Do you enjoy the creativity that lies in plot and character development? Maybe you are a poet? Personally, I always enjoyed the work of others, reading and evaluating manuscripts, designing book covers and magazine layouts. Though there was always that hidden passion of writing that I wanted to pursue.

Whatever your desire, rest assured that you can have a sampling in both. Both MFA’s and MA’s can use their electives to get a taste of the other program in the WLP department. This semester, I am taking a hiatus from the publishing side of the program to enjoy a sampling of the MFA. I am currently taking a fiction writing workshop, a writing intensive course that allows me to read the work of my peers and get honest feedback from them on my own stories. It is a different mentality from the Publishing side, but one that I am fortunate enough to experience.

I am also taking a course on Teaching College Composition. This particular course teaches me the fundamentals behind teaching composition to incoming freshmen and grants me the chance to interview in the spring for open teaching positions here at Emerson College!  Whatever your passion is, the opportunity to teach is resume building and an excellent chance to extend your passion on to others.

So make your decision based on what interests you most, but rest assured that in a department as all-encompassing as WLP (Writing, Literature, and Publishing), you can combine your interests accordingly.
