Integrated Marketing Communications Open House Session

New Delhi, India, is seven thousand miles away from Boston, and it’s my home. I came to Emerson in Fall ‘09 and had never attended an open house at Emerson, well, in my case it was difficult since it was so far away! This past November was my first open house experience and it was just fabulous. It really felt special to be this side of the conversation giving out the answers to the plethora of questions.

After a brief welcome by Kate Bresonis, the Interim Director of Graduate Admission, and a little chitchat with prospective students, Emiliya (our international ambassador and IMC student) and I lead the IMC enthusiasts to the breakout session with the Graduate Program Director of the IMC program, Professor Cathy Waters. She gave a hearty welcome to the prospective students and their guests as we sat down. She went on giving a brief introduction of what the IMC program is all about and how it is different from an MBA. An MBA is more towards the side of business administration, not communications. Classes, like marketing, are merely electives for MBA students, but here it is part of the core! She later gave an example of a marketing problem that students would deal with in class, a little tidbit from her Marketing Management class that I took last year.

Other than Emiliya and I, other current IMC students like Nitjyot Saroan and Yulia Sovenkova were also present to answer specific questions about the program that our guests had. Nitjyot, having worked at the mayor’s office, shared her experiences and gave tips to ‘get in the game’ in the IMC program. Yulia on the other hand, being a ‘grad freshmen’ shared her experience of the program till now.

Following the overview session, the prospective students and their guests had the chance to further talk to the ambassadors, admissions faculty, and also take tours of the campus.

One of the most common questions that I was asked by a lot of students was about internships and whether Emerson College helps students in that regard. We have a department of Career Services that helps students write resumes and assists them in finding amazing, relevant internships. They organize Internship fairs every semester where companies from all around Boston are present to recruit grad students. Career Services also has their online portal called ‘e-hire’ that, once signed up, sends relevant internship opportunities to students via email. Other than that, professors are well connected with the industry and are a great resource.

If you do wish to email us, talk to us or even visit us, feel free to do so by visiting our website. The open house was a pleasure, but if you missed it don’t worry… I’m here!
