There will not be a local team participating in this year’s Central Western Ontario football playoffs.

Both WCSSAA president Jeff Klinck and CWOSSA executive director Barry Mutrie have told me WCSSAA’s first-place team won’t be competing for the right to compete in this year’s Western Bowl, scheduled for Nov. 24 at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.

I’m writing a story for Friday’s Record and will provide a link when it’s ready.

The news will come as a big disappointment for those who had supported Waterloo lawyer Tim Fedy’s plan to have the regular-season champion advance. Fedy, however, said this morning he hasn’t given up and has one other avenue to pursue.

The debate has attracted record numbers to this blog and a large number of comments.

Best of the week

It was another great week for WCSSAA and D8 athletes. Here are just 10 of the students who deserve a nod. Cameron Heights running back Tyler Varga had five touchdowns in a 45-14 win over Southwood, but we won’t mention that. :-)

Caitlyn Hingley and Rebecca Wareham, Resurrection: The Grade 12 tennis players roared back from an early defeat to win CWOSSA golf in the girls doubles category. The two have played together since Grade 9 and earlier this month won their first District 8 title and helped Rez win its third straight overall title.

Great picture by Peter Lee in today’s Record of St. Benedict’s Anne Logo, who at four-foot-10 is the the smallest player in the District 8 senior girls league.

It was a rough start for the Waterloo Region competitors at the OFSAA Golf Festival in Barrie.

CWOSSA champion Brett Maue of Waterloo-Oxford opened the two-day event with a disappointing 11-over 83 at the Barrie Country Club and sits in a tie for 61st going into today’s second round. Toronto’s Brandon Ng fired a blistering 5-under 67 and is the only player on the south side of par. Ng has a six-shot lead.

We have a taker.

The St. David Celtics will join the top tier of the Waterloo County girls hockey league. The Celtics took the free pass to the top after Waterloo-Oxford asked to be sent to Tier 2. The Crusaders will have a lineup heavy on Grade 9 players that would struggle to compete at the top level.

Of interest, commissioner Bert Udema said he had not heard anything from St. Mary’s about joining the league. St. Mary’s athletic director Tom Mandich had said the Eagles would be in the league.

Gotta give the Monsignor Doyle Mustangs credit.

Hawks make me look bad

Ava Cotter on September 30, 2010 in Education Sport Entry No Comments »

Excuse me for a second while I wipe the egg from my face.

While there’s no shame in picking the wrong team to win a football game, when that team goes out and loses by 40 points . . . that’s just bad.

Sadly for me, that’s exactly what happened on Thursday night under the lights at Jacob Hespeler. Hawks running back Brandon Golding had a four-touchdown outing in leading Jacob (1-1) to a 40-0 win over Southwood (0-2).

I will say I got a bit of bad advice on this one, but it’s my name that goes with the pick, so I’ll take the heat.

WCI (1-1) handed me another setback with an 11-8 win over Elmira (0-2), while St.
