I’ve been researching material for a speech I’m giving next month to an audience of Chinese television executives in Beijing. I’m told they particularly want to hear about the way the BBC is structured and the values on which it is based. Well, whatever else you may think about it, the BBC is an organisation with values, and is open about expressing them. In fact, the BBC has got more values than you can shake a stick at.   My Chinese hosts have allotted me a generous slot in the conference schedule. Writing the Paper: The Final Hurrah!

By late-March I had completed all aspects of the study and coincidently landed a full-time position with Massachusetts General Hospital (to start in mid-April)!  I was adamant about finishing the bulk of my work before the job started. I had two weeks for the toughest part—synthesizing.

In his neighborhood of Flushing, Queens, Xiang Wang ’12 watches as the lifeblood of the Chinese immigrant community is drained away. Some of these immigrants, out of a desire to “get rich quick,” have turned to gambling. These parents spend much of their time at casinos instead of getting jobs and funding their children’s education. Advised by Luce Junior Professor of Asian Studies and Anthropology Christopher Vasantkumar, Wang was awarded an Emerson grant to further explore the causes and effects of this detrimental trend.

Alissa Dimock gazes into her laptop and studies a litigation lesson from a Los Angeles community college – all in the comfort of her South Pasadena bedroom.

Dimock has never met her professor. She’s also never sat in his class or set eyes on her fellow paralegal students at Los Angeles Mission College.

Instead, her studies rely on a virtual pedagogic exchange, tapped out every day on a keyboard 25 miles from the Sylmar campus.

“It’s terrific,” said Dimock, 44, seated next to a stack of law books. “I never have to go to school. It’s great.”

Her class, Law 11-Civil Litigation, is among the steadily growing number of online courses being taught at community colleges throughout Los Angeles and California. Read more…
