Governor Kasich’s Straight A Innovation Fund had long gestation

At last week’s ”virtual town hall” meeting to unveil his school funding and reform plan, Governor Kasich asked me to share what I thought was most exciting about his plan. I almost jumped out of my chair with excitement, and responded: “The Straight A Innovation Fund is incredibly exciting…You’re going to be freeing people up, and I think there’s a lot of untapped energy out in the field that’s waiting to, in effect, take charge and take control of the opportunities.”

UVU’S Culinary Arts Institute To Present Annual Gala Dinner

For Immediate Release

Utah Valley University’s Culinary Arts Institute will hold its annual Gala dinner Feb. 8 at 6:30 p.m. at the program’s Canyon Park facility in Orem.

This annual gourmet dinner is designed to spotlight the expertise of the UVU’s culinary students, as well as raise funds for culinary student scholarships. The students are placed in teams to create fine cuisines for guests to experience.

“This really is a celebration of the students,” said Victoria Garrow, director of development with the UVU Foundation. “It is both an opportunity for students to showcase their talents, and for the community to philanthropically support the students’ educational pursuits.”

Activities emphasize social justice, human rights

A revamped People Awareness Week at the University of Florida debuts Sunday in partnership with the Martin Luther King Steering Committee. The program is hosted by the department of housing and residence education.

PAW 2013 kicks off with a service project at Ronald McDonald House and is a weeklong event filled with activities that discuss human rights and bring light to social justice issues.

In partnership with the MLK Steering Committee, noted author Michael Eric Dyson will speak at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Reitz Student Union Grand Ballroom. The Human Rights by Human Hands Art Show hosted by the MLK Steering Committee is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Reitz Union Orange and Brew.

People Awareness Week began in the 1990s and focuses on diversity and social justice issues.

We all drive past abandoned big-box stores and malls from time to time, Brian Ulrich says. Large, empty buildings that once held paying customers and shelves groaning with goods, they are now stoic and bereft. They’re called “ghost boxes,” “dark stores” and “dead malls.” They are surprisingly prevalent, lining roads, occasionally perched at the end of vast, unpopulated parking lots, but we rarely do more than shake our heads and perhaps allow them a glancing thought, remembering when we were frequent customers, as we continue farther down the road to a store that has not yet suffered the same fate.
