CSU head warns of $1B cut

The head of the California State University system warned Tuesday that big tuition hikes may be unavoidable if the state doesn’t extend temporary tax increases as proposed by Gov. Jerry Brown.

Officials at a meeting of the CSU finance committee in Long Beach said failing to extend the tax increases would result in another $500 million in cuts on top of the $500 million already proposed.

Covering the possible $1 billion in cuts may force the university to raise tuition by up to 32 percent, Chancellor Charles Reed told the committee.

“It’s going to be radical. It’s going to generate a lot of pain,” Reed said. The chancellor said he would make formal recommendations in July on how to address the cuts, which he said would give the legislative process time to play out.

How We Celebrated…

The Fourth of July is a big deal in Boston. Each year hundreds of thousands of people congregate on the banks of the Charles River to watch what has come to be known as the premier fireworks show in the country. Following an all-day festival and concert, the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular truly is a sight to see. Heres a look at this years celebration!

The latest hacking allegations about the News of the World have led some to call this a tipping point for UK newspapers – downwards.

But another event today may also contribute to that drift: the launch of a British edition of the hugely successful US news website and aggregating blog the Huffington Post (above).

Styling itself “The Internet Newspaper: News, Blogs, Video, Community”, HuffPo, as it’s widely known, has grown from humble beginnings barely six years ago to be the 93rd-biggest website globally in terms of traffic and visitors – only a few places behind the venerable New York Times. (

For Ronnell Hampton, a first-generation college student who hails from inner-city San Diego, graduating in May from California State University, Dominguez Hills in Carson with a bachelor’s degree was a major triumph. But his sense of accomplishment has since been dimmed by the job hunt.

He’s applied to after-school programs and childhood development centers, as well as to such companies as Target, Citibank, T-Mobile and AT&T. Nothing. He’s even tried the Dollar Tree and Starbucks, to no avail.

“I’m keeping my hopes high – I don’t want to feel defeated,” said Hampton, 23, who in recent years has gone to high schools in his native San Diego to tout the promise of college.
