Statistical portal now available through Smathers

The University of Floridas George A. Smathers Libraries now subscribe to Statista.com, the first statistics portal in the world to integrate data on more than 60,000 topics from more than 18,000 sources onto a single professional platform.

Categorized into 21 market sectors, Statista.com provides companies, business customers, research institutions and the academic community with direct access to quantitative data on media, business, finance, politics and a wide variety of other areas of interest or markets.

Faculty, students and staff can download graphs, which will be a useful resource for student papers and faculty lectures, as well as a reference tool that indexes, sources and links to original sources of data.

Public Participation Encouraged At Third Annual UVU Conference On Autism

For Immediate Release

On April 12, Utah Valley University will hold its third annual Conference on Autism from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the UVU Sorensen Student Center. The conference is part of UVU’s ongoing effort to be a growing resource for autism in the community, and will be followed by an autism awareness balloon launch and baseball game, which are free and open to the public, the next day on Saturday, April 13.

USA Today: Anthony Randazzo

Anthony Randazzo, emeritus professor of geological sciences, was quoted in a March 12 USA Today article about a house that passed inspection and was swallowed by a sinkhole only months later. The story and many others were the result of a UF media relations tip sheet.

Bringing Gardens to Bloom for the Blind

The colors, textures and landscaping at Richmond’s Lewis Ginter Botanical Garden are all but hidden from people who are blind and visually impaired.

But perhaps not for long.

Christina Walinski, a student in the VCU School of Engineering, and her professor, Dianne T.V. Pawluk, Ph.D. are creating a device that could aid those with impaired vision to experience the garden on their own.

The project began when officials approached Pawluk, an associate professor in VCU’s Biomedical Engineering Department and an expert in developing devices and software programs for assistive technology applications for people who are blind and visually impaired.

Alaska State Sources of Financial Aid

  • The Alaska Performance Scholarship

    Description: The Alaska Performance Scholarship program offers a series of merit-based scholarships for qualifying Alaskan high school students who demonstrate academic excellence, and intend to pursue higher education in Alaska.

    Sponsor: The Alaska State Government

    Amount: Up to $4,755 per year for up to eight semesters

    Eligibility Requirement 1: Recipient must be a legal resident of Alaska, who completed a “rigorous” Alaska high school curriculum, maintained at least a 2.5 GPA, and is attending a qualifying Alaska institution at the undergraduate level.

    Eligibility Requirement 2: Specific eligibility information is available in the Alaska Student Aid Portal (ASAP).  Alaska high school students should access their accounts for additional information.

    Application Requirements: Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

    Deadline: December, annually

  • AlaskAdvantage Education Grant

    Description: The AlaskAdvantage Education Grant is a program designed to support qualifying undergraduate Alaska students who demonstrate financial need, excellent academic preparation, and/or interest in pursuing a career in one of Alaska’s workforce shortage areas.  

    Sponsor: The Alaska State Government and the Alaska Student Loan Corporation

    Amount: $500 to a “priority maximum” amount of up to $3,000 per year

    Eligibility Requirement 1: Recipient must be a legal resident of Alaska, attending a qualifying Alaska institution at the undergraduate level.

    Eligibility Requirement 2: Recipient must demonstrate financial need*, strong academics (among top 25 percent of SAT/ACT test takers), and/or enrollment in a workforce shortage degree program – including teaching, nursing, allied health science, social services, and natural resource extraction programs.

    Application Requirements: Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

    Deadline: Complete the FAFSA by April, annually.
